Goal:

To explore the application of methods developed in mathematical statistics in biometric problems, especially in face recognition. In particular, current focus is on improvement of the covariance matrix estimation. Several face recognition system rely on the sample estimate of the covariance matrix. In the past several methods have been presented to improve the sample estimate of the covariance matrix. By applying these methods in face recognition, the performance of the face recognition algorithms might improve.
